Okay technically they don’t have engines, but get your engine revved up for this year’s Pinewood Derby at the Shooting Gallery! This is the fourth year that the San Francisco branch of the Hell’s Bells car club has busted out the big track, and I’m proud to say we’ve run a car every year so you know we’ll be there this time too. The race is Saturday, Sept. 26th, doors open at 6pm, races at 8pm sharp.
You gotta be in it to win it and to win it you gotta enter — $10 will get you your official entry number and car kit, which you can trick out as either a Race Car or Show Car (you also get a free raffle ticket with every entry purchased). Watching the races is FREE! and there will be hot rod themed artwork up for silent auction. All proceeds from the auction and the car kits go to the Bay Area Women’s & Children’s Center.
If you’re wondering just what the heck a Pinewood Derby is you can find out a bit of history and lore right here, and there are some inspiring car designs over here. But the short answer is: you get a block of wood, 4 wheels and two metal axels and you make it into a car that, with a little luck, smokes all the other cars.
